About Chester County PA

At the 2010 U.S. census, Chester County had a population of 498,886. It was the highest-income county in Pennsylvania and the 24th highest in the nation. The county seat is West Chester, although it was originally the city of Chester. Chester was one of the three original PA counties created by William Penn on August 24, 1682 and, was named for Chester, England. The historical significance of Chester County stems from its location between Philadelphia and the Susquehanna River, which allowed it to become a center for commerce along the river.

The PA Railroad which ran through town followed the same route as the river, allowing industry to continue through the area as the years progressed. As a result, many families and businesses settled in the area. Despite this increase in industry, a large portion of the county is home to farmers of crops, horses and mushrooms. The median income for a household was $65,295 in 2010, making it the highest-income county in Pennsylvania and the 24th highest in the nation.
